How did some dinosaurs reach such soaring heights -- up to 100 feet high in some cases? Efficient lungs and respiration, along with egg laying, might have given dinos a growth edge when compared to other animals, suggests new research.

The ones that grew so huge were probably more efficient at processing the food in their environment. That and possibly there were other evolutionary advantages, like being more difficult for the herbivorous ones to become prey of the carnivorous ones.

It is odd that even prehistoric mammals were bigger. What happened?

The mammals were larger when the earth was in a colder climate stage. As pointed out in the article there are heat issues with large sized mammals. This is due to the volume of body cubing, whereas the area to give off the heat only squaring. or at least along those lines, I'm not saying it too well, but we (mammals) give off excess heat mostly through our skin.
Think of it this way. A cubic box 1 inch on a side contains (obviously one cubic inch, but the surface area is 6 square inches. Now take a cubic box 2 inches on a side and it contains 8 cubic inches, but the surface area is now 24 square inches. the volume went up eightfold, whereas the area went up fourfold.
Does that make it understandable?
